This Is Wound Care, the Coolest Specialty in Health Care
There are three little words in health care that without proper treatment can destroy your family’s finances and health. Despite this, the amount of people that have ever heard of the words — non-healing wounds — remains astonishingly low.
We are not talking about simple cuts, scrapes, or boo boos. Wound Care is a raw, gritty, extremely visual, and sometimes nauseating field of health care. It is certainly not for the squeamish. At the same time it is the coolest, most visual, and passion filled specialty of healthcare in which to be employed.

How Technology Is Supporting Smarter Wound Care
Of course, wound care is not the sole preserve of the bandage, and various technologies exist to help wounds heal faster. For instance, German startup ColdPlasmaTech coats a dressing in cold plasma to destroy bacteria and stimulate the body’s own self-healing powers.

A New Tool That Seals Bullet Wounds in Seconds With High-Tech Sponges
CAUGHT IN A fire fight, a soldier might hope for air support rained down from a Predator Drone, a kitted out AR-15 assault rifle, and soon, a tube full of high-tech cotton balls. The last item on the list might seem out of place, but the XStat syringe, filled with scientifically advanced sponges, can plug a life-threatening bullet wound in a matter of seconds.

Can Tilapia Skin Be Used to Bandage Burns?
In the US, animal-based skin substitutes require levels of scrutiny from the Food and Drug Administration and animal rights groups that can drive up costs, Lee said. Given the substantial supply of donated human skin, tilapia skin is unlikely to arrive at American hospitals anytime soon. But it may be a boon in developing countries.
Do Band-Aids Work?
A polyurethane dressing can trap the moisture more effectively than a standard adhesive bandage. (In fact, even ordinary kitchen-grade plastic wrap may be a better choice.) If you choose an adhesive bandage, it’s best to apply a coating of ointment to the wound first, which will provide a much better moisture barrier than the bandage alone. Another good option is a cyanoacrylate, which works like a glue to make a water-tight barrier around the wound.
Does Removing Scabs From a Wound Speed Up Healing?
Scab is a technical anti-shibboleth. The preferred medical term is crust or eschar, the latter being Greek for scab. The edge of an eschar can keep a wound from closing by secondary intention. And an eschar is a sign that a wound is too dry to heal as fast as possible. Having noted that, a crust is the best nature can do in many situations. It is protective.

Maggots Heal Diabetic Wounds
The maggots only eat "devitalized" tissue, and ignore the living tissue, said Eron. This means they are great for cleaning up diabetic lesions that don't respond to standard treatment. For the study, he and his team put 50 to 100 larvae on each wound and left them there for two days, then took them away and replaced them with new ones. They did this about five times per wound.
