Avascular Necrosis
The pessimist looks down and hits his head. The optimist looks up and loses his footing. The realist looks forward and adjusts his path accordingly - Robert Kirkman

Adjusting My Path Accordingly
I like to think of myself as an optimist -- especially when it comes to my health and well-being. Each time I come out of surgery, I set goals and prepare for the battle ahead. The battle is with myself and I have to keep my eye on the prize. I cannot settle. I can even go as far as making unrealistic goals in the hopes that I'll come out of this better... faster... stronger.
However, each new day has it's way of knocking me back to reality. I have to be realistic. I have to adjust my path accordingly. This is the case for so many things -- goals, expectations, feelings.
For nearly six years I have really wanted just one thing -- to walk normal again. Sure, no pain would…

A Reason to Believe
Physically, I'm struggling. My hip pain began in September and progressively got worse. Since it came so soon after the birth of my third child, I brushed it off as "not a big deal." By December, I had trouble walking. An MRI revealed that I had Avascular Necrosis or AVN.
Avascular Necrosis Renamed to Slow Chronic Unfixable Bone Atrophy (SCUBA) to Stop Unnecessary STAT Consults
This is mostly due to an overwhelming amount of unnecessary tests and consultations that have been ordered for this chronic, but not-so-chronic-sounding, condition.
Learning 2 Walk Again
I started this blog after I was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis, or bone deterioration from a lack of blood supply, in my hips and shoulder. It's been a humbling experience, which sent my mind running in all sorts of directions after my body was forced to remain quite still.
My Disease - Avascular Necrosis or AVN
When they finally got around to discovering this, the ONLY option for me was to get a hip replacement. Problem was…I was only 24 years old.

Today we are working at the frontier between what we know and what we need to know about osteonecrosis and Perthes' Disease. Osteonecrosis means death of bone. This results from a wide variety of conditions, many poorly understood, which lead to major joint damage in children and young adults.
Dear Avascular Necrosis aka Osteonecrosis
Diagnosed with AVN at age 27. Within 1 year AVN spread & doctors recommended full joint replacement of both shoulders and both knees. Amongst the many health issues that have arisen along this journey, AVN has proven to be the most difficult and debilitating. The AVN is thought to be caused by corticosteroid use while pregnant for asthma. The AVN continues to spread at rapid pace for reasons unknown.

I live with a debilitating hip condition called Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI). I also suffer from Hip Dysplasia, Femoral Retroversion, Avascular Necrosis and Slipped Capital Femoral Ephiphysis. I want to bring awareness about these painful hip conditions and also make people aware about invisible disabilities. A disability can happen to anyone no matter what their age.

Anyone can be affected by avascular necrosis. However, it's most common in people between the ages of 30 and 60. Because of this relatively young age range, avascular necrosis can have significant long-term consequences.
