Everything we see is a mash-up of the brain’s last 15 seconds of visual information
Our eyes are continuously bombarded by an enormous amount of visual information – millions of shapes, colours and ever-changing motion all around us. For the brain, this is no easy feat. On the one hand, the visual world alters continuously because of changes in light, viewpoint and other factors. On the other, our visual input constantly changes due to blinking and the fact that our eyes, head and body are frequently in motion. To get an idea of the “noisiness” of this visual input, place a phone in front of your eyes and record a live video while you are walking around and looking at different things. The jittery, messy result is exactly what your brain deals with in every moment of your…

A New Technique Uses a Patient’s Own Stem Cells to Restore Their Vision
The procedure described in the paper is also meant for a specific group of patients: people who still have one healthy eye from which to harvest stem cells, but also have an injury extensive enough to rule out a cornea transplant. Jurkunas estimates about 1,000 people in the U.S. meet that description annually. But, she says, the approach is a “stepping stone” to future cell therapies.
A New Theory on the Mysterious Condition Causing Astronauts to Lose Their Vision
For years now, NASA has been puzzled by a mysterious effect of extended space flight: vision damage. Many, though not all, astronauts who have been in space for months at a time experienced their vision slowly degrading, and post-flight inspection revealed that the back of their eyeballs had been squished down and flattened over the course of their trip. But new research presented this week provides a partial answer to what's causing this condition: pressurized spinal fluid.
For Better Vision, Let the Sunshine In
Sunlight is associated with harmful impacts too, of course. Exposure increases the risks of developing cataracts and skin cancer. But Williams says that with appropriate cautions, including sunscreen use and the avoidance of midday sunlight, young people should be able to reduce those risks while potentially bolstering their vision.
How better vision helps communities
Nearly 15 percent of the world’s population needs glasses and other basic vision care. Poverty and remote locations have until lately rendered too many communities unable to receive the kind of vision care much of the world, including the United States, takes for granted. Without glasses and eye exams, individuals and entire communities are unable to achieve their full potential. People deserve the opportunity to see with clear vision, and now a movement is afoot to help those without access catch up. A nonprofit organization called OneSight is leading the charge, with cutting-edge mobile technology that is overcoming the barrier of remoteness. Through deep jungles and over mountain peaks, the group has taken up the goal of better vision as a cause. With your support, this goal is reachable.

See The World Through The Eyes Of A Cat
What does the world look like through a cat’s eyes? The basic structure of feline eyes is pretty similar to what humans have, but cats’ vision has adapted to very different purposes, so the world they see looks familiar, but isn’t quite the same as ours. As predators, they need to be able to sense movement well in very low light. To make that work, they have to sacrifice some of the finer detail and color perception that humans have.
Supporting the goal of better vision
OneSight is now a major nonprofit organization that helps people see and live better around the world. The organization brings comprehensive eye exams, quality eyewear, and permanent vision care access to the people and places most in need. Currently 1 in 7 people worldwide lack access to vision care
The Claim: Eye Exercises Can Enhance Your Vision
For almost a century, eye exercises have been promoted as a way to strengthen vision and ease nearsightedness and astigmatism, much like exercise for the body trims fat and improves health. Some of the most popular techniques include eye-hand coordination drills, eye movement routines and focusing on blinking lights. The techniques are widely promoted online and advocated by various companies, some even claiming that they can reduce the need for glasses and ease learning disabilities. But several studies have concluded that many of these do-it-yourself techniques are baseless.
Vision
Vision is the special sense of sight that is based on the transduction of light stimuli received through the eyes.
Vision vs. Eyesight: What’s the Difference?
While eyesight happens primarily in the eye, vision happens in the brain. Vision is the brain’s ability to process the information coming from the eyes. When the eyes pick up an image, a quick process begins for that image to be translated and understood by the brain. With enough practice, vision can improve.
Visual Acuity
20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet. Having 20/20 vision does not necessarily mean you have perfect vision. 20/20 vision only indicates the sharpness or clarity of vision at a distance
Visual Acuity Testing (Snellen Chart)
This calculator is intended as a convenient screener for visual acuity to be used on a mobile device and should not be used as a replacement for in-office testing. Evidence for smartphone apps for Snellen visual acuity is limited, and currently no app has been found to be accurate to within at least one line of formal visual acuity testing (and further validation is required). Variation in screen resolution and text size may impact accuracy.
What Does 20/20 Vision Mean?
20/20 vision is not perfect vision. A person can have 20/15 vision, which is sharper than average. If you have 20/15 vision, you can see a line in the eye chart at 20 feet that the average person can only see when they are 15 feet away. The goal of glasses or contacts is to bring a person’s vision to 20/20.

Your Brain Might Be Distorting Reality
Some researchers are finding that the things you do could change what your brain sees–but not everyone is convinced.
Everything we see is a mash-up of the brain’s last 15 seconds of visual information
There are positive and negative implications to our brain operating with this slight lag when processing our visual world. The delay is great for preventing us from feeling bombarded by visual input every day, but it can also risk life-or-death consequences when absolute precision is needed.
6 Weird Reasons Your Vision Is Blurry
Some things should be blurry, like a hummingbird’s wings as it flits through the air. Others, like your eyesight, should not. Having blurry vision can range from being slightly inconvenient to pretty panic-inducing. No matter how you feel about it, seeing your eye doctor should climb to the top spot on your to-do list.

The goal of the visual acuity test is to determine the visual clarity or sharpness of vision of a patient. This is tested using the ability to distinguish different optotypes (stylized letters or symbols) at a standard distance.
