Hypothalamus
Doctors don’t have much to do with the hypothalamus. Probably because there is no prescription drug they can offer - Bette Dowdell

The Hypothalamus: Our Unknown King
The hypothalamus, king of our body’s world, is kinda, sorta part of the brain. That is, while it’s attached to the base of the brain and referred to as part of the brain, the hypothalamus isn’t protected by the blood/brain barrier. And it’s this combination of importance and vulnerability that puts us in a world of hurt. Unless we get educated, we will probably do bad things to our hypothalamus every day.
So what does the hypothalamus do? It keeps our bodies in balance (homeostasis in medical terms). It controls body temperature, hunger, thirst, fatigue, anger, sex, emotional attachment, our circadian clock–and on, and on.
How? First, it controls our nervous system through…

An Overview of the Hypothalamus
The hypothalamus plays a significant role in the endocrine system. It is responsible for maintaining your body’s internal balance, which is known as homeostasis. To do this, the hypothalamus helps stimulate or inhibit many of your body’s key processes...
Hypothalamic Amenorrhea 101
Originally, one of my main reasons for starting this blog was to spread the word about hypothalamic amenorrhea (known as HA from here on). Of course, like the (slightly) obsessive compulsive that I am, now I'm addicted to the blogosphere (and to all you wonderful followers and readers) and wouldn't quit even if HA was as understood in the world of infertility as PCOS.
Hypothalamic Amenorrhea – What to do first
It makes me sad how regularly I receive emails from women who are suffering from hypothalamic amenorrhea, have been told by their doctor that the only option is to go on the pill, and are completely and utterly at a loss as to what to do. They want to go down the natural route, but at the same time they are wondering if the medical route would be faster and a better alternative to prevent infertility and osteoporosis.
I Love You from the Bottom of My Hypothalamus...
When you first see someone you feel attracted to, primal instincts evolved over millions of years kick in. The hypothalamus, the region of the brain that regulates basic impulses like hunger and thirst, releases a chemical called phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA leads to the release of other endogenous chemicals such as testosterone (in both men and women). Your heart races, your breathing gets faster, and your palms begin to sweat. Classic signs that you’re into someone.
Scientists Discover 'Reset' Button For Brain's Biological Clock
The biological clock is located in the brain's suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) -- a tiny region within the hypothalamus, a section of the brain that controls hormone production. The SCN maintains a 24-hour cycle of rest and activity that helps us figure out when we should be eating and sleeping. The cycle is also linked to biological activities like hormone regulation, brain wave activity and cell regeneration. And while these rhythms are regulated in the brain, they're affected by external cues like light and temperature.

The most common causes of hypothalamic dysfunction are surgery, trauma (injury), tumors, and radiation.

Scientists discover how the brain’s hypothalamus controls ageing – and manage to slow it down
If you are reading this and you don’t smoke, then your major risk factor for dying is probably your age. That’s because we have nearly eliminated mortality in early life, thanks to advances in science and engineering. But despite this progress, we still haven’t worked out how to eliminate the damaging effects of ageing itself.
You & Your Hormones
One of the major functions of the hypothalamus is to maintain homeostasis, ie, to keep the human body in a stable, constant condition.
