I admit it… I’ve got a great endocrinologist
I like my endocrinologist. There, I said it.
Endos are sometimes a source of dread, or frustration, and some people wind up having to explain a lot about newer technology or drug developments to theirs because, let’s face it, diabetes changes sometimes move faster than their doctor.
But I don’t experience any of that. My last appointment a couple of weeks ago included the typical A1c, and a little blood work. Cholesterol, kidney function, that kind of thing. Vital signs, download of the pump data. Everything checked out okay, though I’m carrying around slightly more calcium than I should be. Who knew you could have too much?

Pump It Up: Diabetes Technologies Continue to Revolutionize Care
As devices become smarter and smarter and improve patient outcomes, they also pose challenges for patient and clinician education. While clinicians ensure all patients are up-to-speed on the new technology, a new threat looms: Keeping data safe.
Rise of the Machines: Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
Artificial intelligence – once only found in a Steven Spielberg movie – is being adopted by the healthcare industry more and more from improving diabetes outcomes to reducing unnecessary thyroid surgeries. As these technologies improve, clinicians will soon have yet another ally to individualize patient care.
What drives your burnout?
Burnout is never far from the mind of a physician. But why? What are some of the key factors that lead to burnout? Here are my thoughts...

It’s ridiculous how prohibitively expensive test strips are: $1.00 each. Insulin is also prohibitively expensive and very difficult to ship. In some cases, if you get insulin from some locations, you can’t always vouch its quality which creates a whole host of problems. Also, if a health care system starts to rely on only donated supplies, it will never change itself.
Is less than 7 percent a reasonable A1C goal?
As this debate was organized by the Endocrine Society, one of the contributors to the joint statement against the ACP target, it’s not surprising that the pre-debate poll showed a skeptical audience, with only 18 percent agreeing with the ACP guidelines. The end of debate poll, however, showed more than a doubling of support, with 43 percent in favor of the ACP guidelines. Still, with the closing numbers so close to 50-50, it’s clear this is still a controversial issue.

Instead of winning points for exterminating virtual pests, can we have children vying to be the most active? Bragging about it? Can it be cool? Nike knows how to make things cool. Why can’t we?
What your Endocrinologist Doesn’t Know
It is not just speculation that physicians, including many endocrinologists, are not integrating new scientific findings into their practices. It’s also not just “alternative” doctors that are making this claim. There have been many articles in well-respected medical journals on this topic and even some that have reached mainstream media, including one written by a former American Heart Association president and published in the Wall Street Journal back in 2003. He argued that patients are not benefiting from new research findings because “doctors think the way they’ve always done things is best.”
“I will survive.” A solo practitioner’s story
“At first, I was afraid, I was petrified. I kept thinking I could never live without you by my side…” so the song goes. That is sort of how I felt when my associate told me she was leaving.
