What Is Life Like After a Cochlear Implant for a Person Born Deaf?
What Is Life Like After a Cochlear Implant for a Person Born Deaf?
Well, this is a tough question for me since I’ve lived far more years with a cochlear implant (CI) than without.
In 1991, I was one of the first 500 children to get a CI after FDA approval of pediatric CIs. I was 6 years old.
A few months prior, my mother had asked me if I wanted to hear. I said yes at once since I wanted to know what the fuss was all about. As my mom explained the operation to me, I got this sense that it’d be magic. (OK, I wasn’t a bright 6-year-old.)
Well, the magic consisted of me being wheeled into an overbright operating room, chilly from only wearing a thin gown. A few…

Cochlear Implant Plus Gene Therapy Could Restore Hearing to the Deaf
Cochlear implants have restored hearing to many deaf people, but they haven’t advanced much since they were unveiled in the 1970s. That may be set to change with an exciting new advance, not in the technology of the device itself, but rather in using gene therapy to increase the device’s effectiveness. Today researchers announced that they’ve been able to restore tonal hearing in guinea pigs with the new method of gene delivery.
Cochlear Implants Are Miraculous and Maddening
The cochlear implant is indeed a miraculous device, restoring hearing to those who would otherwise live out their lives in silence. What the implant -- and the brain -- can’t do, however, is restore hearing to the way it used to be. Cochlear implants are a tremendous advance for people with hearing loss.
My Hearing Journey– My personal learning curve, jumping from hearing aids to cochlear implants
I discovered during my cochlear implant journey that the medic team don’t give you a lot of information, just some general ballpark end-user results and info on the implantation process. Once I started digging, I discovered a whole lot of stuff which enabled me to make an INFORMED decision.
My Two Cents: Cochlear Implants
I have found that one of the BIGGEST misconceptions still floating around when it comes to choices in deafness is in thinking that sign language and cochlear implants are mutually exclusive. They are not.
What Is Life Like After a Cochlear Implant for a Person Born Deaf?
When I turned on the implant about a month and half after surgery, I ran down the hall, screaming. I expected that I would be able to hear instantaneously. That proved not to be the case.
Clarity Now: My Cochlear Implant Journey
At the age of 9, I was diagnosed with severe hearing loss in both ears. For 22 years I rejected accommodations and often pretended to hear when I couldn't. In April 2012, I could no longer ignore my declining hearing. I FINALLY shared my truth, and made the life changing decision to get a cochlear implant. My journey began as a quest to hear, but it's so much more. This is my self-acceptance story. This is my search for CLARITY.
