A completely new culture of doing research.’ Coronavirus outbreak changes how scientists communicate

On 22 January, Dave O’Connor and Tom Friedrich invited several dozen colleagues around the United States to join a new workspace on the instant messaging platform Slack. The scientists, both at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center, had seen news about a new disease emerging in China and realized researchers would need a primate model if they were going to answer some important questions about its biology. “We put out a call to a bunch of investigators and basically said: ‘Hey, let’s talk,’” O’Connor says. The idea is to coordinate research and make sure results are comparable, Friedrich adds. (They named the Slack workspace the Wu-han Clan, a play on the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.)

A completely new culture of doing research.’ Coronavirus outbreak changes how scientists communicate

“This is a very different experience from any outbreak that I’ve been a part of,” says epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The intense communication has catalyzed an unusual level of collaboration among scientists that, combined with scientific advances, has enabled research to move faster than during any previous outbreak.

Acta Virologica

Acta virologica (4 issues per year in printed and electronic version) is an international journal of predominantly molecular and cellular virology. It provides means for rapid publication of original papers dealing with fundamental research mainly on human, animal and plant viruses. As a matter of tradition also rickettsiae are included. Areas of interest are structure, genetics and morphology of viruses, molecular biology of virus-cell interactions, pathogenesis of viral diseases, viral immunology, vaccines, antiviral drugs and viral diagnostics.

Antiviral Research

An Official Publication of the International Society for Antiviral Research. Antiviral Research publishes research reports, short communications, review articles and commentaries on the control of viral infections in humans and animals.

Archives of Virology

Archives of Virology publishes original contributions from all branches of research on viruses, virus-like agents, and virus infections of humans, animals, plants, insects, and bacteria. Coverage spans a broad spectrum of topics, from descriptions of newly discovered viruses, to studies of virus structure, composition, and genetics, to studies of virus interactions with host cells, organisms and populations. Studies employ molecular biologic, molecular genetics, and current immunologic and epidemiologic approaches.

Future Virology

Mankind has been at the mercy of viral diseases for millennia. However, advances in virologic research are occuring at an unprecedented rate. In particular, the fields of virology and genomic research have been closely linked for many years; the first whole genome to be sequenced was viral in origin — bacteriophage phi X174, in 1977. Since then, many more viral genomes have been mapped, and with the human genome also available, it is now possible to determine viral—host interactions during infection in a unprecedented level of detail.

Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses

Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses is the first journal to specialise exclusively on influenza and other respiratory viruses and strives to play a key role in the disemmination of information in this broad and challenging field. It is aimed at laboratory and clinical scientists, public health professionals, and others around the world involved in a broad range of activities in this field.

Intervirology

'Intervirology' covers progress in both basic and clinical virus research, and aims to provide a forum for the various disciplines within virology. Issues publishing original papers alternate with thematic issues, focusing on clearly defined topics. This thematic concentration serves to make timely reviews, research reports and controversy easily accessible to both specialists in the field and those who want to keep track of the latest developments outside their own area of interest.

Journal of Clinical Virology

Journal of Clinical Virology is an international journal publishing papers on any aspect of human virology that directly pertains to virus-induced clinical conditions under the major headings of: Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and Detection, and Prevention and Treatment. Articles from any field of virological study will be considered if the article is relevant to the understanding or manipulation of a disease state.

Journal of General Virology

Journal of General Virology (JGV), a journal of the Society for General Microbiology (SGM), publishes high-calibre research papers with high production standards, giving the journal a worldwide reputation for excellence and attracting an eminent audience.

Journal of Medical Virology

Journal of Medical Virology provides a means of rapid publication of original scientific papers on fundamental as well as applied research concerning viruses affecting humans. These include reports describing the characterization, diagnosis, epidemiology, immunology and pathogenesis of human virus infections, as well as basic studies on virus morphology, genetics, replication and host-cell interactions.

Journal of NeuroVirology

The Journal of NeuroVirology (JNV) provides a unique platform for the publication of high-quality basic science and clinical studies on the molecular biology and pathogenesis of viral infections of the nervous system, and for reporting on the development of novel therapeutic strategies using neurotropic viral vectors. The Journal also emphasizes publication of non-viral infections that affect the central nervous system.

Journal of Viral Hepatitis

The Journal of Viral Hepatitis publishes reviews, original work (full papers) and short, rapid communications in the area of viral hepatitis. It solicits these articles from epidemiologists, clinicians, pathologists, virologists and specialists in transfusion medicine working in the field, thereby bringing together in a single journal the important issues in this expanding speciality.

Journal of Virological Methods

The Journal of Virological Methods publishes original papers and invited reviews covering techniques on all aspects of virology. These include methods for studying the morphology, assembly, replication, composition, function and physiochemical properties of viruses and their components; the purification of viruses and their components; cultivation; properties of viral antigens, production of antibodies, and techniques for studying the immune response to virions...

Journal of Virology

Journal of Virology (JVI) explores the nature of the viruses of animals, archaea, bacteria, fungi, plants, and protozoa. We welcome papers on virion structure and assembly, viral genome replication and regulation of gene expression, genetic diversity and evolution, virus-cell interactions, cellular responses to infection, transformation and oncogenesis, gene delivery, viral pathogenesis and immunity, and vaccines and antiviral agents.

Retrovirology

Retrovirology is an open access, online journal that publishes stringently peer-reviewed, high-impact articles on basic retrovirus research. Retroviruses are pleiotropically found in animals. Well-described examples include avian, murine and primate retroviruses. Two human retroviruses are especially important pathogens. These are the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, and the human T-cell leukemia virus, HTLV. HIV causes AIDS while HTLV-I is the etiological agent for adult T-cell leukemia.

Reviews in Medical Virology

Virologists are acquisitive investigators who wish to apply the latest scientific developments to their own work. The aim of Reviews in Medical Virology is therefore to provide them with articles reviewing conceptual or technological advances in diverse areas of virology. Topics covered will include the molecular biology, cell biology, replication, pathogenesis, immunology, immunization, epidemiology, diagnosis or treatment of viruses of medical importance.
