The diagnosis didn’t come easy
My diagnosis was a slow, painful process. It is actually quite disappointing from a patients perspective. I have not written about for several reasons. One being that there is a medical ethical issue involved and it also brings many painful memories.
Here is how I was finally diagnosed.
I was sent home from the hospital after 10 days, as you have probably read in my blog, without a diagnosis. The following 3 months were the same if not worse than my actual hospital stay. I went to recover at my mother’s home since I was too weak to walk to the toilet by myself, or even bathe. I was down to 100 pounds from a healthy 129 Lbs. I was unable to stay alone while my husband was…

Diagnosis and management of adult onset Still's disease
Adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare systemic inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology that is responsible for a significant proportion of cases of fever of unknown origin and can also have serious musculoskeletal sequelae.
Nocturnal Fever, Swollen Lymph Nodes, Joint Pain
The triad of persistent fever, joint pain and a rash, he explained, is the classic presentation of Adult Still's disease. First described in children, this unusual and poorly understood disease of the connective tissues has a much more benign course in adults.
So what is Adult Onset Stills Disease?
Still’s disease is a very rare form of arthritis that initially presents with high cyclic fevers, extreme fatigue, brain fog, sore throat, non-itchy rash and widespread, muscle, joint and tendon pain. These acute symptoms respond well to steroids but over time the condition evolves into a chronic phase which still involves these acute flares every few months but is dominated by frequent, highly variable, fatigue, with more localised pain and brain fog.

Versus Arthritis
Adult-onset Still’s disease, sometimes known as AOSD, is a rare type of inflammatory arthritis. As the name suggests, it can only be diagnosed in adults. Its name comes from another condition, Still’s disease, which is also known as systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Systemic JIA is only diagnosed in children. AOSD is generally thought to be the same condition as systemic JIA, but there are some differences between them.
Arthritis Foundation
Adult Still’s disease is a rare type of inflammatory arthritis that is similar to rheumatoid arthritis. It shares characteristics of systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, but it begins in adulthood. Inflammation may affect a few joints at first, but may advance to include more joints over time. Some people may have only one bout of the illness followed by lasting remission, while others may develop chronic arthritis.
NORD
Adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare inflammatory disorder that affects the entire body (systemic disease). The cause of the disorder is unknown (idiopathic). Affected individuals may develop episodes of high, spiking fevers, a pink or salmon colored rash, joint pain, muscle pain, a sore throat and other symptoms associated with systemic inflammatory disease.
RheumaKnowledgy
AOSD is a systemic inflammatory disease that typically afflicts young adults. It is characterized by quotidian fevers, evanescent rashes, and chronic polyarthritis.
