Infant Mortality: A Deceptive Statistic

Why is America's infant mortality rate so high or is it?

Virtually every national and international agency involved in statistical assessments of health status, health care, and economic development uses the infant-mortality rate — the number of infants per 1,000 live births who die before reaching the age of one — as a fundamental indicator. America’s high infant-mortality rate has been repeatedly put forth as evidence “proving” the substandard performance of the U.S. health-care system.

 Infant Mortality: A Deceptive Statistic

Critics of U.S. health care disseminate misinformation cloaked as data.

Cochrane Neonatal

Cochrane Neonatal prepares systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of treatment for neonatal diseases or problems. These reviews follow a standard method that includes a well formulated question, a comprehensive search for eligible trials, critical appraisal of trial quality and, where appropriate, quantitative synthesis of the results using meta-analysis.

Hot Topics in Neonatology

For over 30 years, Hot Topics has been the premiere neonatal conference, with more than 1000 neonatologists and perinatologists attending each year.

Neonatal Research

Keith J. Barrington is a neonatologist and clinical researcher and chief of service at Sainte Justine University Health Center in Montréal. He is Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Montréal. He is chair of the Society of Neonatologists of Québec. His particular research interests are in cardiovascular support, in apnea and its treatment, in the ethics of decision making for high risk newborns, and in anything in clinical care that might affect outcomes.

Neonatology on the Web

The Neonatology on the Web site grew originally from the long-standing use of personal computers for on-line reference materials and decision support in the neonatal intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Many of these applications and documents were originally created during my pediatric residency and neonatology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai.

PeriStats

PeriStats is developed by the March of Dimes Perinatal Data Center and provides access to maternal and infant health data for the United States and by state or region, including more than 60,000 graphs, maps, and tables.

STABLE Program

S.T.A.B.L.E. is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.

Best Hospitals for Neonatology

These are the 50 top-ranked neonatal centers. Nurse staffing in neonatal intensive care units, ability to prevent bloodstream infections and patient volume were among the factors making up 75 percent of the score, based mostly on data from a U.S. News survey of children's hospitals. The other 25 percent reflects how many of 450 pediatric neonatologists surveyed in 2011, 2012 and 2013 recommended the hospital.

Euro-Peristat

The objective of the Euro-Peristat Network is to establish a high quality, innovative, internationally recognized and sustainable European perinatal information system. This system's goal is to produce data and analysis on a regular basis for use by national, European and international stakeholders who make decisions about the health and health care of pregnant women and newborns.

Neonatal Formulary

The Neonatal Formulary provides a comprehensive source of information of drug use in pregnancy, in the neonatal period, and in the first year of life, reflecting the way prescribing has to adapt to changes in drug elimination during the first year of life.

Neonatal Information System

The Neonatal Information System is a comprehensive clinical information management system that incorporates data from all aspects of clinical care for critically ill newborns in the NICU. The data capture is accomplished by drop-down menus, point and click, textual entry, voice recognition or by HL7 interfaces linked to patient data generated from other areas of the hospital, such as the admissions office, laboratory, pharmacy, bedside monitors, radiology, etc.

LifePod

Today's incubators just aren't designed to work in the hostile developing world environment. They are expensive and need constant repairs and maintenance, purified water and uninterrupted power supplies, LifePods don't. LifePods purify their own air and water and run for ten years, saving up to 500 little lives for a fraction of the price of existing incubators.
