Becoming a Corneal Donor
Each year, over 30,000 corneal transplants are performed in the United States, with more than 3,000 people waiting for this sight-restoring procedure at any given time. There is no substitute for human corneal tissue—transplant depends solely on cornea donation.
Cornea Donor Awareness
For the most part, corneal donation comes from people who are dead. In very rare circumstances, a donor may be living.
Science Daily
One donor cornea may be divided and transplanted into multiple patients with eye disease or damage, according to a report in the April issue of Archives of Ophthalmology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
UK Transplant.org
Last year, 1,867 people donated their corneas after their death but there is still a shortage in the UK – more people could benefit from a sight-saving transplant if more corneas were donated.
