Nephrologists

Of course there was an idealistic longing to help others, but if I am honest, I chose medicine mainly for the riddles I imagined it would present. I decided then and there I would pursue a career in kidney disease - Evi Nagler

The doctor becomes a patient

I have been a doctor for over 40 years, and in the course of this period have participated in the care of thousands of patients. In 1997 I became a patient myself with a rare type of metastatic sarcoma (a type of cancer) and went through the ordeal of several extensive surgeries and intense chemotherapy. This experience of being a chronic patient with a serious disease greatly enhanced my perspective on being a doctor. Some of these thoughts I share with you today.

The doctor should always try to be the champion for patient health and well-being, and try to keep up with the latest developments, issues and policies, insisting on using the same consultants and referrals for…

How this S.F. startup is taking on chronic kidney disease

Founded in 2015, Cricket Health works to support the estimated one in seven American adults living with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The San Francisco-based startup, which earlier this year outgrew its SoMa co-working space and moved into a newly leased office at 251 Kearny St., is swiftly ramping up its program aimed at slowing the progression of CKD, as well as supporting end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.

We Are More Than “Patients”: It’s Time For Nephrology To Look At The Whole Person

Today a good friend and colleague of mine passed away. Amongst my friends he was the second longest survivor with chronic kidney disease (CKD). His death made me think of how far medicine has come in taking care of us. It always saddens me to see how many doctors measure only the most basic physical wellbeing of people on dialysis. The only thing we can always be sure of is that the doctor looks at our labs. And many make all their decisions solely based on the results of those labs.

Last Month in Nephrology

With the ever-increasing number of scientific publications, we, the clinicians, struggle to make sense of the research. Only a fraction of the published research will actually help change the way our patients ‘feel-function-survive’. We are trying to think aloud on the published evidence, and no way claim to be the final word (which probably doesn’t exist in the field of science). Many nephrology bloggers and bloggers from other specialties inspired us into this venture.
