For those of us who look at genetic engineering with some fear and trepidation, something positive and perhaps good for all is coming out of a farm in Massachusetts. Goats are being genetically engineered to produce a human protein in their milk that prevents the dangerous formation of blood clots.

Currently being considered by the Food and Drug Administration for approval, this protein will be marketed in the form of a drug called ATryn by GTC Biotherapeutics. The company is targeting chronic disorders like hemophilia, severe respiratory disease and debilitating swollen tissues.

GTC Biotherapeutics also asserts that this protein may possibly be derived from the milk of genetically engineered cows, rabbits and other animals. Oh, oh, that may be going to far!
